When do the mountain roads open?

Many people plan on visiting the Icelandic highlands, but not all know that there's only a very short period of the year you can easily visit this part. And you will need a 4x4 car to drive through this area.

There is a lot of snow in the area and it needs to melt so the roads are visible again. But then all this melted snow causes very wet roads as well, so it can stay closed for longer because of that.

All in all, it is usually just a 1,5 month period when the highlands are accessable for "normal traffic".

Going to the highlands with a tour

If you want to visit the highlands, but don't want to drive here yourself, there's several tour companies that can take you there. From the north you can for example go and see Askjawith a travel company.
