My 6 Favorite Puffin Spots

Many people come to Iceland to see the puffins. But where is the best spot to see them?

Let me tell you where I think the best spots to see puffins are. But first of all it's good to know that you can see puffins from half April to half August on land. Before and after that they are out on the sea, so you could still spot them there, but that's a bit more of a hassle.

Puffin Tours

You can obviously see puffins without booking a tour, but sometimes it is also great to combine a nice tour with spotting some cute birds.

  1. Ingólfshöfði Puffin Tour This is without a doubt one of th best tours I've done in Iceland. They take you on a tractor through the middle of nowehere and you end up on a cliff where there are puffins and other birds. The scenery is amazing. 5/5 recommend.

  2. North Sailing - Húsavík Whale Watching Puffins spend a lot of time on the sea. So you can combine puffins watching with whale watching! Especially in the beginning of the season (April / May) you'll have a better chance to see them on the sea than on the land. If you use the code ELISA you'll get 10% discount on this tour.

Where to spot puffins for free

  1. Grímsey: My favorite place to spot puffins. If you love puffins and have the time to spend a day or two here: do it!

  2. Puffins in Borgarfjarðarhöfn: If you plan to drive the whole ring road, make a little detour for this place. You get super close to the puffins here and the drive up there is magical as well.

  3. Cliff viewpoint: Not everyone knows you can spot puffins here. You just have to walk a tiny bit from the parking area, but you'll definitely have a good chance of seeing them here.

  4. Dyrhólaey: There is definitely a chance to see some puffins here if you pay close attention.

  5. Reynisfjara Beach: Up on the cliffs you can see the puffins flying around.

  6. Látrabjarg: This is probably the mist well known spot to see puffins. And it is definitely a great spot, but it is also a very big detour from the ring road. So maybe try the other spots first!

  7. The seventh spot is on the Westman Islands. I have personally never been here, so I can not recommend the best exact location. But The Westman Islands are famous for the amount of puffins, so you can not miss them there!

I hope you get to see puffins when you are visiting Iceland! If there is anything else you want to see and you are not sure what the best spots are: send me a message and I can help you out.
