Warning: the road to get here is a real struggle. I’m usually pretty patient with gravel roads, but this one was just a whole vibe of windy and long, and I was definitely feeling it. Since it’s such a mission to get out to this lake, I’d recommend spending at least one night here. I stayed at the Waikaremoana Holiday Park, which is $18 for an unpowered site. Plus, hot showers there were really good here. Also, heads up—there’s no reception out here, so make sure to book the campsite in advance while you still have service.
Now, onto the actual lake, it’s massive, stunning, and pretty tranquil. I even saw two wild horses just hanging out, which was a cool surprise. You can swim, kayak, or boat around and just soak in the off-grid vibes. The lake’s crystal-clear waters and peaceful atmosphere make it perfect for a bit of relaxation and some outdoor adventures.
