Agia Roumeli is a charming seaside village in the south of Crete. This remote destination is best known as the gateway to the world-famous Samaria Gorge, but it also offers lovely beaches, a relax ambiance, and a glimpse into authentic Cretan life.
Due to its isolated location, Agia Roumeli is accessible only by boat or on foot. Many visitors arrive after hiking the Samaria Gorge, while others take a ferry from nearby coastal towns such as Sfakia, Sougia, or Loutro. This seclusion helps preserve the village’s serene atmosphere.

One of Agia Roumeli’s greatest attractions is its breathtaking natural surroundings. The rugged cliffs, crystal-clear waters, and the majestic mountains create a fabulous setting. The beach at Agia Roumeli is a highlight with dark pebbles, turquoise waters, and a peaceful environment away from crowds.

Agia Roumeli is best known as the exit point of the Samaria Gorge, one of Europe’s most famous hiking trails. The 16-kilometer trek through the gorge attracts thousands of nature lovers and adventure seekers each year. After completing the challenging hike, unwind in Agia Roumeli, enjoying a refreshing swim and a delicious meal at one of the village’s traditional tavernas.
The village provides all the basic amenities, such as tavernas with traditional food, rooms for accomodation, cafés and mini market.

TIP: Daily, between 13:00 and 18:00, the village and its beaches are swamped by visitors of the gorge. After the departure of the ferries, the village gets very calm. Take this opportunity to admire this beautiful place with its unique people, delicious food and stunning natural beauty!

Good to know

For those who don’t want to hike the full 16 km, you can take a boat from Loutro, Sougia, or Sfakia to Agia Roumeli. From there, you can enter the Samaria Gorge and walk up to the famous narrowest section called the Iron Gates. It's a 3,5 km walk from Agia Roumeli until this gate.

Agia Roumeli is a great base if you want to explore the secluded beaches and surrounding area. It’s an ideal starting point for beautiful hikes, giving you the feeling of being alone in the world. It's also perfect for stargazing, as there is no light pollution.

For a ferry, you can go to Anendyk. They operate regularly and connect the southern coastal villages of Sfakia, Loutro, Paleochora, Agia Roumeli, and Sougia.
