Don't have car? Here's how to get around
Traveling around Norway without a car is not only feasible but also a delightful experience, thanks to the country's efficient and comprehensive public transportation system. Norway offers a range of options, including buses, trains, ferries, and even flights, which connect various parts of the country.
Buses and trains: The bus and train networks in Norway are extensive and offer a reliable way to travel between major cities and towns. The trains, operated by Vy are providing scenic routes through the countryside. Buses fill in the gaps where train services are limited, and they often offer a more extensive network reaching smaller villages and rural areas.
Ferries: Given Norway's vast coastline and abundance of fjords, ferries are a vital part of the transportation system. They connect the mainland with numerous islands and are also integral for crossing many fjords. The ferry rides also offer a chance to see some of Norway's most stunning landscapes from the water.
Light rail and metro: In larger cities like Oslo, the public transportation system includes buses, trams, a metro system (T-bane), and local trains, all integrated into a single ticketing system called Ruter. Bergen also has a light rail system, which is a convenient way to travel around the city.
Flights: For longer distances, especially to the northern part of Norway, domestic flights can be a time-saving option. Airports are well-connected to the city centers and other regions by public transport.
Plan your trip
Tools like Entur.no and Google Maps are invaluable for planning trips using public transport in Norway. They provide up-to-date schedules, route options, and ticketing information. It’s advisable to plan and sometimes book your journey in advance, especially during peak travel seasons or for long-distance routes.
