The Shafer Trail Viewpoint in Canyonlands National Park is a must-see for the adventurous outdoor enthusiast. Located near the Island in the Sky visitor center, this stunning viewpoint provides a 1,500-foot descent through colorful sandstone cliffs. The trail was named after John “Sog” Shafer, who used the route to move his cattle from summer pastures up on the mesa top to winter ground down in the canyon. Today, visitors can experience the thrill of venturing down the sandy cliffs as they drive across this historic and challenging off-road path. With its striking scenery and incredible sense of adventure, Shafer Trail Viewpoint is just one of many unforgettable sites within Canyonlands National Park, incredible in the sunrise or sunset light.

When planning to travel on backroads, especially during or after rain, it's advisable to exercise caution, be prepared for changing conditions, and, if possible, choose a vehicle with suitable off-road capabilities. Always prioritize safety, and if road conditions seem questionable, consider delaying your trip or choosing alternative routes.
