Always check weather beforehand as this is a hike through a slot canyon that is subject to flash flooding and can often be closed during monsoon season due to dangers of flooding. Do not take these warnings lightly- people die in this canyon from flash floods every year.

*There are multiple trailheads that provide access to Buckskin Gulch. Wire Pass Trailhead offers the most direct access for a day hike. This is not to be confused with the Buckskin Trailhead, which follows a wash for several miles before intersecting with Wire Pass Trail and then the confluence with the Paria River.

Buckskin Gulch is an incredible 13-mile slot canyon located in southern Kane County, Utah - just right along the Arizona border. With its twisting and turning narrow passageways, this sheltered terrain offers hikers a unique kind of adventure! This outdoor paradise features striking views of spectacularly tall sandstone walls as well as up to forty feet high logs sticking out from the side. It is one of the longest and deepest slot canyons in the Southwestern United States - and it's a spot that's definitely worth visiting!

After you leave the trailhead, you’ll follow a wash to the entrance of the canyon at 1.3 miles in. The sandstone walls will confine and open up several times as you traverse to the confluence with Buckskin Gulch at 1.75 miles. There is a petroglyph at the base of the large alcove on the right. You can continue up Buckskin Gulch for as long as time will allow. If you love taking pictures, be sure to buffer lots of extra time on your trip for photography — you will need it, as this is one of the most photogenic tours you can take in Utah.

I recommend doing this hike as early as possible, and on a weekday as weekends and mid-day can get quite busy. Starting your hike art sunrise is also great because as you are on your way back the canyon walls start to glow Orange. This is an awesome pet friendly trail, but one small spot about a half mile in with a ladder that you will need to lift your dog up if they aren't comfortable doing it themselves (Seen in images for scale)

House rock road can also be impassible when wet, always good to check road conditions on the BLM site linked below for updates. Its highly recommended to have a 4x4 to drive to the trailhead, but not needed if the roads are dry.

Depending on the time of year, cold knee-deep pools of water or large swaths of mud will persist along the hike and must be forded, so be prepared to get your feet wet and/or muddy a bit!

You can hike as short or as long as you'd like, and even 1-2 miles of the hike are still just as stunning! A wide angle lens is a must here to capture the canyons, I recommend anything in the 14-16mm range. If you do bring a tri-pod, please be mindful of in when going through narrow sections to not scape delicate canyon walls.

The Stateline Campground is super close off of House Rock Road, and a go to for camping in this area; great to camp if you're catching sunrise at Buckskin or the Wave. Weekends do fill up as the campground is first come first serve and free to camp as its on BLM land. There is no service here, but some of the cleanest well maintained sites I've camped at!
