Äscher is one of Switzerland’s most iconic mountain guesthouses, perched on a cliffside in the Alpstein region of Appenzell. The Berggasthaus Äscher serves hearty Swiss cuisine, including traditional Rösti and local cheese dishes, making it the perfect place to rest and refuel while enjoying the spectacular surroundings.

There are two ways to get to Äscher: By foot from Wasserauen or by cable car to Ebenalp, followed by a short hike.

Getting there by cable car from Wasserauen

First up, catch the gondola from Wasserauen to Ebenalp. A short hike from Ebenalp to Äscher leads past the Wildkirchli caves, where evidence of prehistoric human settlements has been found, adding a fascinating historical aspect to the walk.

The path is well-maintained and it takes about 15 to 20 minutes to reach the restaurant.

Hiking to Äscher

The hike from Wasserauen to Äscher is a challenging but rewarding ascent through the stunning Alpstein region. The trail covers about 3.5 km with a partially quite steep elevation gain of roughly 800 meters, taking around 2 to 2.5 hours depending on your pace.

The route winds through dense forests, past alpine meadows, and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks. It’s a demanding hike but well worth the effort for the scenery and the experience of this iconic mountain guesthouse.

Seraina’s Tip: Whichever way you choose to get to Äscher, make sure you wear sturdy shoes and prepare for some time in the mountains. Sneakers or flipflops are not an option as it can be dangerous and accidents have happened! So please leave these at home.
