Gonçalo Velho Lighthouse on Santa Maria Island is one you have to add to your list. Standing tall on the island’s southeastern coast, this lighthouse has been guiding sailors since the 1920s and offers some of the most breathtaking coastal views in the Azores. It’s a quiet, peaceful spot where you can take in the wild Atlantic, dramatic cliffs, and the kind of solitude that makes you feel like you’re at the edge of the world.

Location:

You’ll find this historic lighthouse in the parish of Santo Espírito, about 30 minutes from Vila do Porto, the island’s main town. It’s perched high on the cliffs overlooking the Atlantic, making it a prime spot for incredible panoramic views. The drive there takes you through rolling hills, past traditional whitewashed houses, and along some of Santa Maria’s most scenic coastal roads.

What to Expect at Gonçalo Velho Lighthouse

A Historic Beacon – Built in 1927, the lighthouse is named after Gonçalo Velho Cabral, a Portuguese navigator who helped discover the Azores in the 15th century.

Jaw-Dropping Ocean Views – From the cliffs, you get a stunning, uninterrupted view of the Atlantic. On clear days, you can even spot the Ilhéu da Vila, a small islet off the coast.

A Peaceful Escape – This isn’t a crowded tourist spot. It’s quiet, remote, and perfect for soaking in the natural beauty of Santa Maria.

A Great Photo Spot – Whether you're into landscapes, architecture, or just capturing the perfect ocean backdrop, this place delivers.

Best Time to Visit ☀️

Morning & Afternoon – For the best lighting and ocean views.

Sunset – If you’re up for an evening visit, the golden light reflecting on the cliffs makes for an unforgettable scene.

Spring & Summer – The weather is warm, and the views are extra vibrant with lush greenery.
