Bijodaira is an enchanting stop on the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, renowned for its dense, ancient forests and vibrant birdlife. This area, with its lush forests of beech and giant Tateyama cedars, offers several short, beautiful hiking trails perfect for immersing yourself in nature. Rich in wildlife, Bijodaira is home to over 60 bird species, making it a top spot for birdwatching enthusiasts. The forest also boasts giant trees, some dating back 200–300 years, with iconic Tateyama cedars over 1000 years old—designated as one of Japan's "Top 100 Forest Giants." Each tree has a unique name and a grand presence that makes a lasting impression.

Trail Highlights

  1. Bijodaira Forest Trail

    • Distance: Approximately 1.5 km loop

    • Duration: 30–45 minutes

    • Difficulty: Easy

    • The trail winds through a rich canopy of beech and cedar trees, providing ample shade and opportunities for birdwatching. The sound of birdsong and occasional sightings of species like the Blue-and-white Flycatcher, Great Spotted Woodpecker, and Narcissus Flycatcher make it a tranquil and engaging hike. Ideal from May to June for peak birdwatching or in October for stunning fall foliage.

  2. Giant Cedar Viewing Path

    • Distance: 1 km round trip

    • Duration: 20–30 minutes

    • Difficulty: Easy

    • This short path highlights the massive Tateyama cedars, some over 1000 years old. Stop by the "Bijosugi," a symbolic cedar tree near Bijodaira Station, said to grant blessings for love and relationships. The enormous trees have earned Bijodaira the nickname “Land of the Forest Giants.”

  3. Observatory Terrace Trail

    • Duration: 15 minutes from Bijodaira Station

    • From the station’s rooftop observation terrace, take in panoramic views of the Tateyama mountains and, on clear days, the distant Toyama Plains. When clouds form, you may even feel as though you're floating on a sea of clouds.

Seasonal Highlights

  • Spring (May–June): A birdwatcher's paradise, with sightings at their peak as birds become more active.

  • Autumn (October): Vibrant colors take over the landscape as beech, rowan, and birch trees turn red and gold, making for picturesque foliage along the trails.

Access

  • From Tateyama Station: Take the Tateyama Cable Car to Bijodaira Station (approx. 7 minutes).

  • From Toyama: Take the Toyama Chiho Tetsudo line from Toyama Station to Tateyama Station, then board the cable car to Bijodaira.
