Yuyama No Sato is a secluded onsen located in the Myoban area of Beppu, known for its sulfuric aroma and milky waters. This peaceful retreat is tucked away in the mountains and surrounded by a beautiful bamboo forest, offering a serene and traditional Japanese onsen experience far from the crowds. Unlike modern hot spring facilities, Yuyama No Sato provides a more rustic and authentic feel.

Basic Info:

  • Location: Yuyama No Sato, Myoban, Beppu

  • Hours: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM

  • Closed: Thursdays

  • Fee:

    • Outdoor baths: 600 yen (includes towel and water, 1 hour)

    • Private bath: 3,000 yen

  • Tattoo Policy: Tattoos are allowed

  • Phone: 090-4988-4179 (Mr. Tsunematsu)

Unique Features:

  • Private Bath: Housed in a cozy bamboo cabin, the private bath is spacious, clean, and offers a stunning view of the surrounding forest. For a fee of 3,000 yen, you can enjoy this peaceful bath with complete privacy.

  • Open Air Baths: Yuyama No Sato also features mixed-gender open-air baths where visitors can relax in swimsuits while enjoying the beautiful natural surroundings. These outdoor baths are perfect for groups of friends looking to experience onsen together.

  • Footbath (Ashiyu): After the short walk through the bamboo forest, you can relax with a footbath, which is large enough to accommodate multiple people. You can even sip fresh hot spring water as you soak your feet.

  • Mud Bath (Doroyu): A fun option, especially for children, the mud bath allows you to experience the rich minerals of the onsen. By stirring up the sand beneath you, you can watch white onsen minerals rise to the surface, adding a unique element to your bath.

  • Basic Baths: Yuyama No Sato also offers more traditional onsen baths, including one with a perfect view of a nearby waterfall and another located right by a creek. There’s even a twin waterfall bath where you can soothe your back and shoulders under the running water.

History:

The onsen was created by Beppu native Tsunematsu-san, whose family has deep ties to the area. The site used to be lined with huts where locals made onsen bath salts from the mineral-rich waters over a hundred years ago. Now, Tsunematsu-san has transformed this sacred ground into a peaceful onsen retreat.
