Mount Taranaki is a beautiful, circular volcanic cone located on the West Coast of the North Island. Legend says that Taranaki used to be located in the central North Island, before a mighty battle erupted over love. After losing the battle, Taranaki fled to the coast and got trapped, where he now rests.

There are many epic walking tracks, huts and multi-day hikes to do at Taranaki. The popular Pouakai Tarns are one of New Zealand’s best day walks, or make it an overnight loop with the Pouakai Circuit. Other popular attractions in the park include Wilkies Pool, Syme Hut, and Dawson Falls.

Remember: Taranaki is an alpine environment and weather can change drastically. It is recommended to take a sunhat and raincoat, and apply sunscreen, whatever the weather. Check the DOC website for up-to-date information and check the weather forecast before your visit.

Personal tip: Spend a few days in the region, exploring all that Taranaki has to offer. It’s known as being a “shy” mountain, often tucked away in the clouds. You may need a few days contingency to be sure you can see the beautiful symmetrical cone.

Pronunciation: Taranaki: taa-raa-naa-kee

Pouakai: poe-aa-kai
