4wd required? In winter
Parking:
Park at the end of Graham Valley South Branch Road - at the Flora Carpark. A 4WD is necessary in winter as the road is quite steep and at a very high elevation so will likely be icy, and sometimes under snow. The carpark is at almost 1,000m above sea level.
The Track:
The walk itself is very easy. It's a short 2km walk on a 4WD track downhill to the hut. Holding a toddlers hand with them walking, and you should still make it in under 1 hour.
Being a 4WD track, it's pretty easy to walk on for all ages with no technical or overgrown bits. Only bit that sucks is back out from the hut is uphill, but at least your bags are lighter at this point!
Hut:
The hut is actually split into 2 6-bunk rooms, with a woodshed between. This means if there are 2 seperate groups, you each get your own 'hut'. Which is handy if one of the groups has possibly not as good sleeping kids and the other group doesn't have kids with. There's lots of grass space and a lovely creek to have a play. Plus a few day trip options from the hut if you wanted to stay a couple of nights. Such as Mt Arthur & the Gridiron Rock Shelters.
Recommendations:
This is an awesome first hut for all ages. Just save it for summer unless you know how to handle a 4wd on snow and ice and when to make the call for putting chains on too.
