Steinetinden, a peak located between Stamsund and Steine on Vestvågøy, offers an accessible and scenic hiking experience. While it may not be as dramatic as some of Lofoten’s towering giants, its proximity to Stamsund makes it an ideal choice for travelers looking to stretch their legs after arriving on the Hurtigruten or exploring the local area. The trail features breathtaking views of the Norwegian Sea, surrounding islands, and rugged coastal landscapes. Wildlife enthusiasts will also enjoy the chance to spot seabirds, migratory songbirds, and ptarmigans.

Starting point: Steinetinden is easily accessible from the village of Stamsund, a cultural hub with galleries, cafes, and a working fishing community. From Leknes, follow road 815 to Stamsund. Alternatively, if approaching from the east, take the coastal route along 815 for a shorter drive. Upon reaching Stamsund, continue until you see the Joker market on your left, then turn right onto Ringveien. Drive approximately 650 meters until the road curves gently for the second time. On your right, you’ll find a small parking area near a cross-country ski track marked by streetlights. This is where your hike begins. (Google Maps coordinates: 68.130273, 13.837280)

Route: The trail starts by entering the forest along a well-defined path. After about 100 meters, take the small trail that branches off to the left, marked with a sign. Another 100 meters along this trail, it splits. You have two options:

  1. Via Mannfallet (Scenic Route): The left trail leads to Mannfallet (308 meters), a smaller peak offering excellent views and a gentler ascent. From Mannfallet, the trail descends into a flat grassy area before beginning the final, steeper climb to Steinetinden.

  2. Direct Route to Steinetinden: The right trail continues through the forest and ascends steeply towards Steinetinden. This path can be muddy and slippery in wet conditions but is shorter and more direct. Many hikers prefer this route for the descent to create a loop.

Regardless of your chosen path, both trails converge in a grassy plateau between Mannfallet and Steinetinden. From here, a steep climb of about 150 meters brings you to the summit.

The summit of Steinetinden rewards your efforts with panoramic views of the Norwegian Sea, scattered islands, and the rugged Lofoten coastline. The experience is serene, with opportunities to capture incredible photographs and observe local wildlife. However, caution is required near the summit, as parts of the trail pass close to sheer cliffs with drops of 400–500 meters. In wet conditions, the rocky sections can become slippery, requiring careful footing.

Difficulty according to Norwegian standards: Blue = Suitable for moderately trained hikers with basic hiking knowledge and some experience in the terrain.

Distance: ≈ 4 km
Elevation gain: ≈ 509 meters up & down
Duration: ≈ 2-3 hours
