Wat Saket, also known as the Golden Mount, is an iconic Buddhist temple in Bangkok, Thailand. Located on Boripat Road in Pom Prap Sattru Phai district, the temple dates back to the Ayutthaya period and has been renovated many times since. Most notably, King Rama I built a large chedi here which was made from mud-and-brick, only to partially collapse due to the soft soil of Bangkok. The locals renamed it Phu Khao Thong (“Golden Mountain”) and it became a tourist attraction and symbol of the city. There are many interesting festivals held at the Wat Saket every year including 'Hae Pha Khuen That' when devotees write their names and the names of family members on a long red robe and pray, believing that their prayers will be fulfilled. The temple also serves as home to several vultures which were brought by the dead bodies brought in during the cholera epidemic that swept Bangkok during the early Rattanakosin period.
