Escape the Crowds: Experiencing Iceland like the locals used to

Having grown up in Iceland, I have definitely noticed the increase in travellers all around the island and with its growing popularity, navigating the landscape without the company of crowds can be a challenge. But don't worry, as a local that travels a lot around the country, I've figured out a few ways to escape the hustle and bustle and experience the true essence of Iceland.

  1. Regional differences: It's no secret that the south coast and the golden circle are generally the most popular areas in Iceland - and for good reasons. But they other regions have just as many unique attractions as those and the further away you go, the fewer people will be there. I feel that the Eastfjords will most often grant you the most solitude in Iceland - and they're epic!

  2. Seasonal differences: There's a big seasonal difference in the number of travellers that come to Iceland. Around 2.000.000 people visit Iceland every year (give or take and the number is growing) and around 40% of that is during the summer months. So consider traveling during the shoulder seasons - spring (April to June) and fall (September to October). Each months definitely has it's pros and cons, so you'll have to consider what you're looking for when deciding when to visit.

  3. Get up early: The specific time will depend on the season but aim to do most driving before the sun comes up if you can. Not only will you be treated by the beautiful morning light, but there's also a higher chance of you having these iconic spots to yourself before the crowds descend later in the day.

  4. Venture off the beaten path: I would never discourage you from visiting the most popular spots (they're popular for a reason) but much of Iceland's true magic lies beyond the biggest attractions. Connect with locals or use online resources (maps, blogs, etc.) to seek out and discover lesser-known destinations and hidden gems - even around the popular regions. When you feel it's too crowded for your liking, just by walking away for a few minutes you might find yourself in solitude, alone with the Icelandic nature (just don't get lost!).

  5. Midweek vs weekends: If possible, plan your visits to popular attractions on weekdays. Many tourists tend to arrive on weekends, so opting for midweek exploration can significantly reduce the number of fellow travellers you encounter.

  6. Embrace the midnight sun: During the summer months, Iceland doesn't really get dark due to the midnight sun. That means you can basically use this extended daylight to explore 24/7 but you'll probably want to sleep at some points but shifting your sleep/wake schedule a bit can help you experience Iceland without the crowds. By either waking up suuuper early or staying up until after midnight, you can visit even the most popular spots in Iceland and potentially be the only person there. And as a bonus, it's also the best light.

  7. Plan and patience: Strategically plan your itinerary to visit popular sites during off-peak hours. Be patient and flexible, allowing for spontaneous detours when you stumble upon a hidden gem or find a peaceful moment away from the crowds.

From my own experience I do believe these tips will not only help you beat the crowds but also discover a quieter, more personal side of Iceland, where the beauty of the landscape unfolds at your own pace with nothing but the sound of nature in your ears. I hope you found these helpful!
