A few websites and apps that will make your Iceland trip run more smoothly
As you gear up for an unforgettable journey around Iceland, having the right resources can make all the difference between a smooth, well-informed trip and unexpected challenges. Iceland's dynamic landscapes and seasonal differences demand some preparation, and a handful of online tools can enhance your travel experience. Here's a curated selection of resources I personally use to keep at your fingertips:
This is the emergency number in Iceland.
This is an Iceland-specific weather forecast with all the information you might need. Weather changes quickly in Iceland so it's important to check the forecast when planning a trip in Iceland. Since the weather is so unpredictable a long-term forecast isn't really available in Iceland and I would recommend checking it daily.
The official source for safe travel in Iceland, run by ICE-SAR (The Icelandic Association for Search and Rescue). Here you can see the latest travel warnings and other safety related information when it comes to travelling in and around Iceland (storms, eruptions, accidents, etc.). There's also an app which will help you stay updated. You can submit your travel plans and get notifications through subscribing to their website.
You'll want to check this site before you head out to make sure all the roads you intend to drive are open and accessible. This is most important during winter when the road conditions are the worst.
I mostly use this site and the two apps I use the most are My Aurora Forecast and Hello Aurora. My Aurora Forecast is a simple app that's mostly based on the KP index while Hello Aurora offers a more professional and reliable forecast based on a few other different metrics. You'll always want to check the cloud coverage too since that will ultimately decide where you'll want to go.
A great app to plan your days with regards to the position of the sun. Many places are better to visit during certain hours than others so taking that into account can be useful when making your plans.
Icelandic news in English. Probably not the most exciting news in the world, but every now and then a politician gets drunk in public or there's an eruption.
So much interesting and useful information about Iceland I don't know where to begin, just check it out!
I know this is a lot so I'd recommend saving this in your phone so you'll have easy access to it during your travels. If you'd like even more detailed information about these type of things, we can cover that - and everything else you might want to know before you come to Iceland - in a video call.
