Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya is an exciting place full of fascinating history and culture. The city was formerly the capital of Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya province in Thailand since its official establishment in 1351 by King U Thong, being the second Siamese capital after Sukhothai. It is estimated that Ayutthaya had a population of approximately 300,000 by the year 1600, and was sometimes known as the 'Venice of the East'. Today, visitors can explore the ruins of the old city which are preserved in the Ayutthaya historical park, as well as visit some of the city's other notable cultural sites such as Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon, Wat Mahathat, Wat Chai Watthanaram and Wat Na Phra Men, all of which offer a glimpse into the city's vibrant past.
