Umpherston Sinkhole is a really cool spot in Mount Gambier that you definitely don’t want to miss. This place is a fascinating sunken garden created from an old limestone cave that collapsed back in the 1880s. Now, it’s a lush, green oasis filled with cascading ferns, colorful flowers, and a charming pond at the bottom, oh and it’s free to visit.
When you get there, you'll find a pathway leading you down into the sinkhole. The views from both the top and the bottom are incredible, but it’s especially magical in the late afternoon or early evening when the light creates this dreamy, almost otherworldly effect. One of the highlights is the friendly possums that come out around dusk. They’re used to visitors and are pretty curious, so don’t be surprised if they come up to say hi. You can even feed them fruit, though they’ll likely come close even if you don’t.
For perfect insta pics, check out the lookout points and capture the stunning contrast between the vibrant greenery and the stark rock walls. It’s also a peaceful spot for a picnic, so bring some snacks and enjoy the serene surroundings.
