The Mili Gorge is an easy-to-walk trail starting at the village of Xiro Chorio. The gorge's vegetation creates a jungle-like atmosphere, complete with a flowing stream. The path follows an ancient kalderimi steeped in history, offering a perfect blend of nature and culture. You will pass benches and a few picknick areas during the hike.
Deeper into the gorge, you'll encounter old abandoned houses, remnants of a once-thriving village now reclaimed by nature. The deserted homes and water mills serve as silent witnesses to the area's past. Several small historic churches are also tucked away, adding a spiritual charm to the hike.
The Mili Gorge is accessible year-round. In summer, the dense foliage provides ample shade, while winter rains transform the stream into a lively watercourse, adding a sense of adventure. The main trail stretches about 4.5 kilometers, but longer routes up to 14 kilometers are possible by extending the hike beyond the gorge.
Reaching the Mili Gorge is easy by taxi or rental car from Rethymnon, just 7 kilometers away. Starting the hike in Xiro Chorio, you can enjoy a coffee at the local kafenion before setting off.
