The hike to the Tre Cime di Lavaredo (Three Peaks) is one of the most famous hikes in the Dolomites. It typically takes around 3 to 4 hours to complete, depending on your pace and the route you choose. The full loop around the Tre Cime offers stunning views of these towering peaks, as well as the surrounding valleys and rugged terrain (but consider more time, there are a lot of places where you want spend some time).
Cave View
A must-see spot along the hike is the cave view, a beautiful spot offering a unique perspective of the Three Peaks through a small cave-like structure. This spot is particularly beautiful at sunrise but also amazing during sunset when the light casts dramatic colors over the peaks, creating an unforgettable scene. If you're aiming for a magical experience, visiting during these times is highly recommended, as the soft morning or evening light enhances the landscape's beauty.
Cliff View
The spot from the second picture can also be found right next to the cave. To reach it, stand in front of the cave and climb up the slope on the right side. As you go higher, you’ll find a narrow path that runs along the rock face. However, you should definitely be free from vertigo, as the trail is quite exposed.
For those visiting for the first time, here are a few important tips:
Duration and Difficulty: The hike is moderate in difficulty and can be completed in about 3 to 4 hours, but be prepared for uneven terrain, especially if you're doing the full loop.
Best Time to Visit: Sunrise and sunset are the best times to experience the full beauty of the area. If you're looking to avoid the crowds, try to arrive early in the morning or later in the evening. And dont forget a head lamp. Personally I prefer this spot during the summer months, from June to September, when the trails are clear of snow and the weather is generally favorable for hiking. This period offers the most accessible conditions, with long daylight hours and comfortable temperatures.
Parking: There is a parking area at the Auronzo Mountain Hut where the trail starts, but it can get crowded, especially during peak season. Arriving early in the morning will help you secure a spot.
Keep in mind, the road to the Auronzo Mountain Hut is toll-based, and it’s quite expensive. In recent years, the fees have increased annually, making it a bit of a costly journey. However, if you’d prefer to avoid the toll, it’s also possible to park further down and take a shuttle bus to the viewpoint. You should also keep in mind that the toll road to the Auronzo Mountain Hut is closed during the winter months, typically from late October or early November until late May or early June, depending on snowfall. Always check current road conditions before planning your trip, as reopening dates may vary each year.
Car: 30€ (2024)
Camper Van 45€ (2024)
keep in mind the parking ticket is valid for 12 hours from the moment it is issued. If the 12 hours are exceeded, the price of an additional ticket will be added.
shuttle bus is around 10€ per person, but you have to book your place in advanced here
Weather: Be sure to check the weather forecast before your hike, as conditions can change quickly in the mountains. It's always good to be prepared for sudden weather shifts.
What to Bring: Sturdy hiking boots, enough water, and snacks are essential. A camera is a must, as you'll want to capture the stunning landscapes. If you're hiking in the early morning or evening, bring warm clothing as temperatures can be cooler at higher altitudes and a flashlight or headlamp.
Hike: There are many different hikes up here, and these are two popular options to reach the location, as well as the shortest ones.
