The Convent of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is an ancient religious structure located in Lisbon, Portugal that has a long, fascinating history. The medieval convent was built in 1389 by Constable D. Nuno Álvares Pereira, from the small Carmelite convent on lands acquired from his own family and the admiral Pessanha. After the 1755 earthquake, the destroyed Gothic church was left as the main trace of the disaster. During its history, the convent has seen many changes including various repairs, the housing of certain military organizations, and the transformation into an archaeological museum. Today, visitors can explore the ruins of the once great structure, taking in the views of the Lisbon Castle Hill and visiting the museum which contains artifacts and relics spanning Portugal's history.
