The Kehlsteinhaus, commonly referred to as the ‘Eagle’s Nest’, is a famous Nazi-constructed building erected atop the summit of the Kehlstein, a rocky outcrop in Obersalzberg near the southeast German town of Berchtesgaden. Completion on the structure’s 800 metre-long road and 4 metre-wide entry tunnel was rushed in order to be open for Adolf Hitler’s 50th birthday in April 1939, despite the winter weather and the loss of 12 workers during construction. It was visited 14 documented time by Hitler and it even played host to his sister-in-law’s wedding reception in 1944. Allied forces also used the building as a command post until 1960 when the State of Bavaria took control again. Today, visitors can catch the elevator up the mountain, and enjoy beautiful views from the beer garden or take an informal tour of the rooms with a guide.
