The Wahweap Hoodoos, located in southern Utah near the town of Big Water, are among the most striking and lesser-known formations in the Paria Rimrocks region. While areas like Toadstool Hoodoos get more foot traffic due to their proximity to U.S. 89 and established BLM trailheads, the Wahweap Hoodoos reward those willing to take a longer, more rugged route into the backcountry with one of the most unique and surreal geological displays in the Southwest. Towering white spires capped with dark sandstone or purple conglomerate boulders rise dramatically from a soft base of Entrada sandstone, which appears in hues of gray, cream, pale green, and rust. The tallest hoodoos here—some over 30 feet—look like ancient sentinels frozen in time.

The hike to reach the Wahweap Hoodoos begins at the edge of Big Water, following Wahweap Creek for approximately 4.6 miles (one way). The route is unmarked and follows the sandy wash of a seasonal creek, so expect a rough and potentially wet walk depending on current conditions. The canyon is wide and mostly open, with little shade or visual interest until the last mile, when the hoodoos emerge unexpectedly along the base of the cliffs. There are multiple creek crossings—how many and how deep depends on recent rainfall or snowmelt—so be prepared to get your feet wet, especially in spring. If the conditions are muddy or water levels are high, traction devices or hiking poles can be useful.

There are two main access routes:

  • Route 1: From Cottonwood Canyon Road, which branches off US-89 between mileposts 17 and 18, then heads east for about 10.5 miles to reach the creek and a short walk to the hoodoos.

  • Route 2: The more commonly used approach starts at Big Water. From the 2WD parking area near a corral and fish hatchery, high-clearance vehicles can continue for another 0.8 miles to a second parking spot near Nipple Creek. This is where most people begin the trek. A faint trail leads into the Wahweap Wilderness Study Area; however, ATV access is restricted, and the terrain beyond is all foot-access only.

While the trail is technically easy, there’s no marked path until the hoodoos come into view, so a GPS or offline map is essential. You’ll want to start your hike just before sunrise for the best lighting. The sandstone glows with soft purples and blues in the pre-dawn light, transitioning to rich golds and creams as the sun rises. Don’t miss the third and furthest set of hoodoos, known as the White Ghost Hoodoos—arguably the most spectacular and photogenic. These are located just beyond the initial clusters and well worth the extra effort.

  • Best seasons: Spring and fall offer the most comfortable hiking conditions. Avoid summer unless you're starting well before sunrise—there is no shade, and this is a 9-mile round trip.

  • Winter hikes are possible but come with cold temps and strong winds, so dress accordingly.

  • Be alert for flash flood risks year-round, especially during the monsoon season (July–September).

  • Dogs are allowed, but due to the distance, terrain, and potential heat, only bring pets that are trail-savvy and in good shape.

  • There is no fee or permit required to hike to Wahweap Hoodoos, but this is a pack-it-in, pack-it-out wilderness area with no services, so come fully prepared with food, water, and navigation tools.

GPS Coordinates:

  • Trailhead: 37.112308, -111.688794

  • White Ghost Hoodoo: 37.162110, -111.712397

This is one of the best off-the-beaten-path adventures in southern Utah. If you’re seeking solitude, surreal beauty, and a sense of discovery, Wahweap delivers big without the crowds.
