  1. Language: Canada has 2 official languages: English and French. Whereas the majority of the country speaks English, French is mostly spoken in Quebec.

  2. Currency: Canadian Dollar. Check the exchange rate for your country before you go.

  3. Cash/Card Payments: You don't really need cash when visiting Canada. No matter how small the amount your credit or debit card is accepted almost everywhere. Cash is useful when going off grid camping, where sometimes you have to put money in an envelope to pay for the camping fee. (if you are not comfortable to leave your credit card details)

  4. Tipping: Tipping Culture is huge in Canada. A minimum of 15% is expected when eating at a restaurant and you are being served. However I don't tip at coffee shops where no service is provided even though some people expect it.

  5. Cell Coverage/Wifi: All major cities have good cell coverage however there is a lot of remote areas without cell service even in the touristy areas like the Icefields Parkway and on major highways. So please plan accordingly. I recommend getting a prepaid sim card right at the airport that will cost you around 30 dollars for 10Gb of data or get an E-Sim directly on your phone.

  6. Roads: There is a major highway going through the whole country from East to West called Highway 1. Most cities in the touristy areas are well connected with paved roads. However there is a lot of remote areas so if you are doing hikes you might need a 4x4 or high clearance vehicle.

  7. Weather: Summers in Canada can be very hot and winters can be very cold especially in the mountains. If you are going in the winter months please prepare for temperatures up to -40 degrees. Vancouver has mild winters and wam summers.

  8. Water: Tap water in Canada is clean and you usually can drink it without any problems. Restaurants also serve free tab water with your meal.

  9. Camping: Most campgrounds need to be booked in advance visit the BC Parks Website or the Parks Canada Website if you are camping in a national park. There you will find all the info about front and backcountry spots.

  10. Wildlife: Canada has lots of wildlife including bears, cougars, wolfs and elk. Please familiarize yourself with methods how to avoid a bear encounter and never go hiking alone. Bears can come into residential areas so always be prepared. Check the Parks Canada Website for more Infos
