Nestled on the Wairarapa coastline, Castlepoint is a remote, but gorgeous destination with lots to do. The iconic lighthouse perched on Castle Rock provides stunning panoramic views of the rugged coastline and the Pacific Ocean. Located on the east coast, it's a great photography spot, particularly during sunrise and sunset when the colours dance across the sky.

The expansive sandy beach is perfect for swimming, surfing, or simply soaking up the sun. Explore the rock pools at low tide, or take a stroll along the beach to spot seals basking on the rocks. A short, steep climb will take you to the Castlepoint lighthouse which is exposed on the cliffs. For the more adventurous, climb up the Deliverance Cove Track, a 1.5 hour return track for 360 degree views of the Castlepoint lagoon, lighthouse and out to the Pacific Ocean.

Getting there: Castlepoint is approximately two and a half hours' drive from Wellington. Follow State Highway 2 to Masterton, then take Castlepoint Road towards the coast. The Deliverance Cove Track starts from the carpark, and the lighthouse track starts from the beach.

Remember: Castlepoint is known for being rugged, moody and windy. Be aware of changing weather conditions, particularly if venturing onto the rocks or swimming, as sea conditions are unpredictable. Respect wildlife, stay 20m away from any seals and do not get in between seals and the ocean.

Personal tip: Although it is off the beaten path, Castlepoint is worth the detour!

Pronunciation: Wairarapa - wai-raa-raa-paa
