General

The Brooklyn Bridge is one of the most iconic landmarks in New York City. Connecting the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn, this historic suspension bridge offers a unique pedestrian walkway above the vehicular lanes, providing stunning views of the Manhattan skyline and East River.

The Pedestrian Walkway

  • Access Points: Pedestrians can access the 1.1-mile walkway from either the Manhattan or Brooklyn sides of the bridge.

  • Manhattan Entrance: Located near City Hall and the Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall subway station.

  • Brooklyn Entrance: Located in the DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass) neighborhood, near the intersection of Tillary and Boerum Streets.

  • Separate Walkway: The pedestrian walkway is elevated and separate from the vehicular lanes, offering a safe and scenic walking experience.

The Experience

  • Iconic Views: As you walk across the bridge, you'll be treated to breathtaking views of the Manhattan skyline, the Statue of Liberty, and the East River.

  • Historic Architecture: Marvel at the bridge's impressive neo-Gothic architecture, including its two massive stone towers and intricate cable systems.

  • Photo Opportunities: The walkway offers numerous vantage points for capturing iconic photos of the bridge and surrounding landmarks.

Tips

  • Timing: Visit early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid peak crowds and enjoy a more peaceful experience.

  • Weather: Check the weather forecast and dress accordingly, as the walkway can be windy and exposed to the elements.

  • Guided Tours: Consider joining a guided walking tour to learn about the bridge's history and architecture from knowledgeable guides.

  • Transportation: The bridge is easily accessible by public transportation, including nearby subway stations and ferry terminals.

  • Explore the Neighborhoods: Before or after your walk, explore the vibrant neighborhoods of DUMBO and Brooklyn Heights on the Brooklyn side, or the Lower Manhattan area on the Manhattan side.
