Altamura is a vibrant small town in the Apulia region of Italy. It is known for its particular quality of bread called Pane di Altamura, which is sold far and wide. The area has been inhabited since ancient times, with evidence of over 50 tumuli from 3000 BC. During the 15th and 16th centuries AD, it was mistaken for an ancient city named Petilia. In 1232, the city was refounded by emperor Frederick II, and it went on to become an important centre for art and culture. Today, Altamura is best known for its many museums, including the National Archaeological Museum, and traditional medieval fairs like Federicus, held every year in April. When visiting Altamura, be sure to explore its rich history, discover interesting artifacts, and savour the popular local bread!
