1. Sim Cards

   • Local Sim Card: Purchase a local sim card at the airport for internet and call rates. Major providers like Dhiraagu and Ooredoo offer various plans. Look for a package that includes sufficient data and calls for your stay. Local sim cards are not so affordable tho, it's 40$ for 30GB but it's the best option - also e-sim are more expensive. I recommend you share it with one person or just use the Wi-Fi.

2. Avoiding Scams

   • Stay Vigilant: It's always recommended to be cautious of overly friendly locals offering unsolicited services. Avoid sharing personal information and keep valuables secure. HOWEVER, I find locals the best source to explore the islands in the best way, they can recommend you the best place, restaurant, activity to do or go to and make you live the best local experiences. For instance, I was invited to break the fast, a intimate dinner with the family during Ramadan, and it was one of the best experiences ever. Learning and sharing with Maldivians.

3. Cheap Accommodation

   • Guesthouses and Homestays: Stay in budget guesthouses or homestays. Look for accommodations with breakfast included to save on meal costs. Websites like Hostelworld and Booking.com offer reliable options. Or have a look at my guide ;)

4. Cheap Transport

   • Public Ferries: Use public ferries for inter-island travel instead of private speedboats. Ferries are significantly cheaper (literally 2-3$!!! compared to 20-150$ of private speedboats) but have limited schedules. Check the ferry timetable on Internet in advance and plan accordingly.

5. Gadgets

   • Essential Electronics: Bring a good quality camera for capturing memories, a tripod for stable shots, and necessary adapters for charging devices. You need a power plug adapter on the Maldives for sockets type D. Sockets type G can fit your plugs, but may not always be available locally. A waterproof case is essential for beach and water activities.

6. What to Pack

   • Travel Essentials: Pack light clothing suitable for tropical weather, swimwear, a hat, sunglasses, and reef-safe sunscreen. Bring snorkeling gear if you have it to avoid rental costs (5$). Include a basic first-aid kit and personal medications.

7. Saving Money

   • Cost-saving Tips: Eat at local cafes and restaurants instead of resorts. Take advantage of free activities like beachcombing and exploring local villages. Bargain at local markets for souvenirs.
