Nanzen-ji Temple is one of those places in Kyoto that feels effortlessly peaceful.

It’s a huge Zen temple with towering wooden gates that make you feel tiny when you walk through.

The temple grounds are free to explore, and they’re stunning, think little stone pathways, a picturesque aqueduct (super photogenic!), and beautifully kept gardens.

If you want to go inside the main hall or the sub-temples, there’s a small fee (around 500-600 yen).

It’s not as crowded as some of Kyoto’s other famous temples, so you can actually take your time and soak in the calm atmosphere.

If you’re up for it, there’s a small hike behind the temple that leads to a hidden waterfall—such a cool little surprise!
