Access: both start and end points are accessible via the JR Kisei Main Line. From Owase or Aiga Stations, a bus to the Washige stop allows access to the southern end of the pass

Highlights

• The trail features a well-preserved stone-paved path, approximately 2 kilometers in length, winding through wooded valleys and slopes.

• At the summit, a tall rock inscribed with a poem by Karyoen Toitsu, a poet who visited Kumano in 1852, offers a cultural highlight.

• The Guardian Statue for Crying Children was originally erected for travelers to pray for safe journeys and later used by parents praying for their children.

• Magose Park, accessible via a side trail, provides panoramic views of the mountains and the Sea of Kumano. It is particularly beautiful during the cherry blossom and azalea seasons.

Binshi-yama Peak, a more demanding 2-hour hike, rewards hikers with expansive vistas of the Sea of Kumano and its islands

• The best times to visit are spring and early summer for cherry blossoms and azaleas or autumn for Japanese bush clover.

Wet season

Generally starts in early to mid-June and lasts until mid to late July. During this period, you can expect high humidity and frequent rain, which may make hiking more challenging. Trails can become slippery, and visibility may be reduced in dense fog or heavy rainfall. However, the lush greenery during this season can be quite beautiful, adding a unique atmosphere to the hike.
