Ásbyrgi Canyon is a stunning natural phenomenon that can be accessed only fifty miles east of Húsavík in the north-western region of Iceland. This peculiar horseshoe-shaped depression formed approximately eight to ten million years ago, after a volcanic eruption beneath Vatnajökull glacier caused catastrophic floods in the Jökulsá á Fjöllum river basin. With its hundred-metre tall cliff faces and serene woodland below, visitors can marvel at the breathtaking landscape as well as explore myths of Odin’s eight-legged horse having hoofed the earth here. At Ásbyrgi Canyon, travelers will not only find an array of experiences from guided tours, hikes and boat trips, but also have the chance to see Iceland’s wild Arctic foxes, Europe’s most powerful waterfall Dettifoss and neighbouring columns of rock formations in the Jökulsárgljúfur canyon. Make sure to add this majestic site to your bucket list!
