As soon as you land and pick up your rental car, you can head straight to this spot—it’s just a 2-minute drive away! I recommend parking in the village of Vatnsoyrar. Be cautious when crossing the street, and look to your right to spot a statue of a horse named Nik/Nikkur.

The legend of Nikkur, or the Nix, is a captivating piece of Faroese folklore steeped in mystery. Known as a mythical, shape-shifting creature, the Nikkur often appears as a beautiful horse that resides in lakes. It lures unsuspecting people, especially children, with its charm, only to ensnare them and drag them into the water. However, the creature’s power can be broken if someone shouts its name, causing it to lose its hold. This legend symbolizes the allure and danger of nature, reflecting the cultural connection between the Faroese people and their dramatic landscapes

To honor this myth, a statue of the Nikkur, named Nik, is located near the village of Vatnsoyrar on Vágar Island. This spot is conveniently just a two-minute drive from the airport, making it a perfect first stop for visitors. You can park in Vatnsoyrar and cross the street carefully to see the statue, which celebrates this haunting yet enchanting tale. Combining cultural heritage with the stunning scenery of the Faroe Islands, this site offers a meaningful glimpse into the islands' rich mythology.
