Pyrgi is one of the 24 mastic gum producing villages in the south of Chios. They simply call them the "Mastihohoria", which translates to "mastic villages".

Pyrgi is one of a kind. It follows the Genovese style and its walls are decorated with geometrical patterns in black and white. The way they make it is similar to the Italian "sgraffito" - in Greek we call it the "xisto" (ξυστό), which means "scraped". They use black and white sand and scrape it on the surface to make it nice and lean. It was first used in the medieval times and still remains the same after so many centuries.

Roaming around the village is something I recommend, as you constantly keep finding more and more cute corners. The most important museum in the area is of course the Chios Mastic Museum which is quite close to Pyrgi and I promise you, it's one of the most interesting museum visits ever!
