The Stoosbahn is the steepest funicular train in the world, transporting visitors to the car-free alpine village Stoos in central Switzerland.
The funicular has spherical cabins that keep you upright as you ascend 744 meters, at times at a gradient of 110% (47 degrees). It pass through tunnels and over bridges, with stunning views of the surrounding alps.
It's a fast ride, covering 1.7 km (1.1 mi) in just 8 mins. When you arrive in Stoos, most ride chair lifts to viewpoints and hiking trails.
The Stoos funicular train is located at Grundstrasse 232, 6430 Schwyz. There is lots of metered parking next to the funicular station. By car, travel time is about 50 mins from Lucerne or Zurich.
By public transport: Train to Schwyz, then bus to Schwyz, Stoosbahnstop. From Lucerne or Zurich about 1h20.
Tickets
You can buy a ticket just the Stoos funicular to visit the village (free with GA and Swiss Travel Pass).
But most people want to visit the Fronalpstock viewpoint or hike the popular ridge trail. In these cases, you'll need a "Peak Experience" ticket, which includes the funicular and chair lifts.
