This beautiful alpine lake is clearly a favorite among locals and a real treat for anyone willing to make the small effort to drive here. The lake is nestled high in the mountains, but accessible by car or bus.
Location: near Toggenburg region and Liechtenstein, see lake parking on map
When to go: best mid May to mid October
Walk around lake
There is a nice walking path around the lake. It takes about 45 mins to go all the way around. See trail map.
If the water level is high, the path can be flooded in some areas and you'll need to detour to higher ground.
If you would like a longer hike, we like the Moorweg Gampfin, which does a 7 km loop above the lake. It passes through beautiful moorland, filled with flowers.
What to do
Next to the lake, there a café selling snacks and hot meals as well as picnic areas, with tables and fire pits.
Near the parking and bus stop, there's an alpine cheese dairy, where you can buy cheese made from the milk of the cows you see in the area.
On hot days, you can swim in the lake, though it can be quite chilly. Fishing is popular here, but you must have a permit.
How to get there
By car: The P5 parking is closest to the lake - see on map. To get there, we suggest driving to Grabs, then follow signs to Voralpsee up the mountain road. It's a good road, but narrows to one lane eventually, so drive carefully.
