cause who wants to hike in line?
Avoiding crowds during levada walks in Madeira has pretty much become my personal sport! It will truly enhance your hiking experience because no one wants to walk in a line. Here are some tips to help you escape the crowds:
Choose less popular levadas: do some research and pick levadas that are less frequented by tourists. While the well-known levadas are often crowded, there are plenty of hidden gems to explore.
Hike during off-peak hours: start your hike early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the midday crowds. Most tourists begin their hikes around mid-morning, so going earlier or later can help you enjoy a more peaceful experience. Please note that the 'perfect' (aka quiet) timing may differ per hike!
Visit during the low season: consider traveling to Madeira during the shoulder seasons (spring or autumn), when there are fewer tourists. This can make your hiking experience much calmer and more enjoyable.
Avoid weekends and holidays: levada trails are usually busier on weekends and public holidays since locals also love to enjoy them. Plan your hikes on weekdays to reduce the chance of running into crowds.
Opt for longer or more challenging hikes: longer and more difficult levada walks tend to attract fewer people, as most tourists prefer shorter and easier hikes. Just make sure you're physically prepared for more demanding trails.
Stay near the levada: if you're planning to hike a less crowded levada that’s far from your accommodation, consider spending a night in a nearby village or town. This allows you to explore the area without feeling rushed.
Join guided tours with small groups: Some guided tours limit the number of participants, offering a more intimate and less crowded hiking experience. Look for tours that focus on smaller groups—or send me a message for recommendations!
Be flexible with your schedule: If you encounter crowds on a particular trail, be ready to adjust your plans. Explore a different levada or return at a quieter time.
Lastly, please stay aware of local regulations while hiking in Madeira and leave no trace behind. This includes toilet paper, which doesn’t decompose as quickly as you might think.
With these tips and a bit of planning, you’ll be able to enjoy the beautiful levada walks in Madeira while avoiding the crowds.
