Northern Norway: Midnight Sun Roadtrip

Imagine a sunset that lasts for five hours on the most beautiful beach you've ever seen.

Mornings spent hanging with herds of reindeer that casually stroll down the sand, and afternoons hiking up soaring ridge lines, or surfing on Arctic blue waves.

Sip coffee in villages where charming red buildings seem to cling to the wave-battered rocks, and explore trails, summits, beaches, and coasts that blend to create an Arctic landscape far grander than you could have imagined.

This 9-day itinerary takes you on a journey from Tromsø through Senja and down to Lofoten, while hugging the shore of what's possibly some of the most beautiful scenery on Earth. Find recommendations on beaches, viewpoints, and places to camp, plus tips on hiking trails, where to find parking, indoor activities for rainy days, and fun-filled activities for kids.

So, if you've dreamt of Northern Norway, but just don't know where to start, let this guide be the jumping off point for a trip you'll never forget.

Meet the Ellisons:

It was probably twelve years ago, somewhere between Borneo, Bolivia, or Rwanda, that we realized one day, whenever we have kids, our love for travel and outdoor adventure just wasn't going to simply go away... Today—along with our three young boys—we specialize in family adventure travel from swimming with whale sharks in Western Australia to strapping on snowboards in Japan.

We're based in Maui (but are big fans of road trips), and our idea of "vacation" means surfing in Baja, caving in Belize, or climbing up Guatemalan volcanoes at sunrise, after camping out under the stars. And—even though we're more than comfortable just pitching a tent on the beach, we still appreciate a water slide, resort, or luxury stay, now and then. When working with a property, DMO, or traveling independently, our goal is to showcase adventure activities that help families connect, spend time in nature, and go outside and explore
