Hesten is the reason you came here to Senja—this is the view you came for!

While it isn't long, this trail is still steep, and you gain a lot of vertical ground in a short amount of time. But the views, the views—did we mention the views? This trail looks out at the famous peak, Segla, which rises out of the Arctic Ocean like a massive, sheer slab of stone.

Set in the town of Fjordgard, Hesten starts out easy enough, with boardwalks and switchbacks as you climb towards a saddle with views of neighboring Segla.

The final part of the trail is basically scrambling up rocks and and walking on scree—there isn't much a of a trail—but the next next thing you know you're standing at the summit, looking out at the ocean below.

Make sure to remember to keep the kids close—some areas at the top have vertical drop-offs, so just away from the edge!

100% worth every step of effort. Don't leave without doing this hike.

(Tip: DO NOT take the trail up to Segla. The better views are from the trail up Hesten, which provides a view of Senja's peak, without actually climbing up it.)

Total distance 4km / 2/5 miles. Plan on spending about 2-3 hours.
