Tips that everyone should know prior to adventuring in a canyon
🥾 New to exploring slot canyons? Slots are such a fun and unique experience, but do require proper planning and preparation. Here are a few tips to help keep you safe:
1️⃣ Choose a canyon to match your skill level. Many canyons are accessible by hiking, however some require more technical gear. Know what you’re getting in to before you go.
2️⃣ Always check the weather before heading out. Flash floods in a slot canyon can be fatal.
3️⃣ Never hike a slot canyon alone. Think about the movie 127 hours — that’s why.
4️⃣ If you’re claustrophobic, there can be some very narrow passages. The most narrow slot I’ve fit through is around 10 inches wide.
5️⃣ If you hit an obstacle you’re not comfortable with, TURN AROUND. You know you can safely exit via the same way you got there, but if there’s an obstacle you doubt your ability to climb on the return, DONT RISK IT.
6️⃣ Wear sturdy shoes and pack a small backpack. Traveling with kids? Go for the soft carrier as most structured backpacks won’t fit. Also keep in mind some slots have water in them year around, so know the slot before you go. (IE - Zebra)
7️⃣ HAVE FUN!!
