This is one spot you will definitely want to add to you're bucketlist.
Moonscape Overlook is one of the best sunrise spots in all of Utah!
Mars-Like Landscape: Moonscape Overlook offers a surreal, otherworldly view of vast badlands and eroded hills, resembling the surface of the Moon or Mars, with shades of gray, blue, and tan stretching to the horizon.
Remote Location: Located near the Factory Butte area outside Hanksville, Utah, it’s a hidden gem that requires a drive on unpaved roads, making it a quiet and uncrowded spot for photographers and adventurers.
Photographer’s Paradise: The overlook is famous for its dramatic lighting during sunrise and sunset, creating incredible shadows and colors across the rugged terrain, perfect for capturing unique landscape shots.
IMPORTANT -- DON'T VISIT UNTIL YOU READ THIS FIRST!
🚨 Every viral reel about Utah name drops Moonscape Overlook, except they never mention how dangerous this terrain can be. Likely not a popular approach on tourism or views — but your safety is important. ⬇️
⚠️ This is one place I’ve never felt comfortable geotagging simply because of the risk. Early in February 2024, a young man was killed as the ground crumbled beneath him and he fell to his death. No he wasn’t at the famous point people stand on, he was simply doing what he loved, taking photos from the rim. I’m far from a geologist and expert of rocks, but much of this area was formed by erosion — keep that in mind when thinking about stability.
No, I’m absolutely not trying to scare you into not visiting, but hopefully helping you explore safely if you do.
1️⃣ Steer clear of the edges — the dirt is crumbly and recent history shows it can collapse underneath you without warning.
2️⃣ If you visit with a dog, make sure to leash them.
3️⃣ This is not a kid friendly location. We haven’t and won’t take Georgia, but if you’ve got kids in tow, let them enjoy from the safety of your vehicle.
4️⃣ Don’t even think about visiting if it’s rained. It’s a NASTY drive if the road is wet. When this wet dirt dries, it almost turns to concrete on your tires.
➡️ There’s a reason this place is so popular. I agree it’s one of the most insane landscapes I’ve ever visited to watch the sunrise, and I’ve done so on multiple occasions. If you visit — please be mindful of your actions and steps. No view is worth the cost of your life.
