Fascinating Facts About Cedar Breaks National Monument

  1. A Giant Natural Amphitheater: Cedar Breaks features a massive natural amphitheater over 2,000 feet deep and more than 3 miles wide, carved by millions of years of erosion. The colorful layers of limestone, sandstone, and shale showcase vibrant hues of red, orange, and purple, similar to Bryce Canyon but at a higher elevation.

  2. High Elevation Beauty

    • Sitting at over 10,000 feet above sea level, Cedar Breaks is one of the highest national monuments in the United States. Its elevation offers cooler temperatures and sweeping views of the surrounding Dixie National Forest and Colorado Plateau.

  3. Wildflower Wonderland

    • The monument is famous for its summer wildflower display, with meadows bursting into vibrant colors during July and August. It hosts an annual Wildflower Festival, celebrating native blooms like paintbrush, columbine, and penstemon.

  4. Dark Sky Sanctuary

    • Cedar Breaks is designated as an International Dark Sky Park, making it an incredible place for stargazing. On clear nights, the Milky Way and countless stars are visible without light pollution, and the park frequently hosts astronomy programs. I shot the aurora here on 10/10/24 and had zero light pollution -- see last photo.

  5. A Haven for Wildlife

    • The monument is home to a variety of wildlife, including mule deer, porcupines, marmots, and over 80 species of birds like Clark's nutcracker and Steller's jay. The high-altitude ecosystem also supports unique plant species, including ancient bristlecone pines, some over 1,500 years old.

If you're looking for an alternative to Bryce Canyon, this is the perfect stop and your park pass will also work here!

Pets are welcome on paved areas of Cedar Breaks including parking lots and paved overlooks, as well as the Sunset Trail. All pet owners must follow the following regulations.

  1. Pets must be on a leash no longer than 6 feet, under physical restraint, or caged at all times.

  2. Pet owners must pick up after their pets and dispose of waste in a trash receptacle.

Pets are not permitted inside park buildings, on unpaved trails, or other non-paved areas of the park.

Aurora photos were taken during the October 10, 2024 event. It is typically NOT seen here.
