Velocity Basin is a hidden gem nestled in the high country near Silverton, Colorado. This advanced hiking trail offers stunning views of a turquoise lake surrounded by towering peaks. The rocky 4x4 road to the trailhead adds to the adventure, and the steep climb to the ridge line will definitely get your heart pumping. Just be prepared for some challenging navigation as the trail is unmarked and requires some serious wayfinding skills. But the payoff at the top is totally worth it! The lake itself is accessible by driving, however the views from above will require hiking. I would at least recommend hiking to the first ridge (see last photo)

This is probably my favorite Alpine Lake to paddle in the San Juans, You will need 4x4 to get all the way to the lake, but it will dump you out only a couple hundred yards away at most. There is option hiking to the ridge above if you're up for a booty buster.
