Animas Forks Mine, located in Colorado, was a bustling mining town perched at over 11,500 feet in the San Juan Mountains. Established in the early 1870s, it quickly grew to house around 450 residents, complete with cabins, a hotel, and even a newspaper. Despite facing extreme weather challenges like blizzards and snow slides, the town thrived through mining activities until the early 1900s when its decline began. Today, Animas Forks is a popular ghost town destination, attracting visitors eager to explore its historic charm and rugged mountain setting.

When driving from Silverton, a 4x4 with high clearance is preferred, but on years when roads are in good condition, AWD and high clearance will suffice. Sections of the road are very rocky so would be nervous taking street tire.
