The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is an annual event held in Scotland, featuring military bands and artistic performances on the Esplanade of Edinburgh Castle. Originating from a Dutch phrase meaning "turn off the tap," the term "tattoo" refers to a ceremonial evening entertainment performed by military musicians. Since its inception in 1950, the Tattoo has grown in popularity, attracting over 220,000 spectators each year before the pandemic-related cancellations in 2020 and 2021. With a mix of traditional and modern elements, including fireworks displays and international performers, the Tattoo has become a beloved tradition that showcases military precision and cultural diversity.
