Hike

Sasagamine to Hiuchi return

Length: 16.5km / 10.25 miles

Time: Around 10 hours total

Elevation gain: start at 1,313m to 2462m (1,149m ascent / descent)

Favorite features: this hike has some beautiful alpine flowers during the warmer months. It is also a little more remote than other hikes as it's deeper in the mountains. The panoramic views from the top are stunning.

Description

Mount Hiuchi is a mountain located in Niigata Prefecture, Japan, standing at 2,462 meters high. Known for its alpine plants and wildlife, it offers several climbing routes to the top, including the popular route from Sasagemine. The area is a favorite among nature enthusiasts for its stunning scenery, including the picturesque Kōya-ike pond with vibrant autumn foliage. With cozy mountain huts for accommodation, Mount Hiuchi provides a perfect getaway for hikers looking to immerse themselves in the beauty of Japan's Kubiki Mountains.

The drive to the start of the trail is pretty in case you just want to enjoy the scenery in the area. There is also a mountain hut that operates in the warmer months. I've added a detailed website for the trail details.

Tip: this is real bear country. Take a bear bell at very minimum and if you want bear spray you can find it an the Mont Bell hiking stores.
