Activity
While this one is quite a straight forward hike in the summer it can also be a nice introduction to backcountry skiing in Japan in winter. You can stop at Nekodake if you just want to ski down into Davos ski resort otherwise you can also traverse across to Mt Azumaya.
I only recommend this kind of activity to those who are experiences, trained, have the right equipment, and go in a group.
DON"T ATTEMPT THIS OTHERWISE!
Snowshoeing Ascent:
Starting Point: Sugadaira Kogen, accessible via car or bus from Ueda.
Ascent Time: Approx. 2.5–3 hours depending on snow conditions.
Route:
Begins with forested areas at lower elevations.
Opens into broad snow-covered slopes leading to the summit.
Backcountry Skiing Descent:
Descent to Ski Resort:
The descent route follows backcountry terrain with powder snow leading back to Sugadaira Kogen Ski Resort.
Terrain: Gradual slopes; suitable for intermediate backcountry skiers.
Time: Approximately 1–1.5 hours depending on skill level and snow conditions.
Specific Avalanche Considerations: Always check local avalanche reports before the trip.
By Car: Around 25 minutes from Ueda Interchange on the Jōshin'etsu Expressway.
By Public Transportation: Ueda Bus services from Ueda Station to Sugadaira Kogen.
Parking is available at Sugadaira Kogen.
Avalanche Risks:
Avalanches are a real concern in this area during winter. Skiers and snowshoers should carry avalanche safety gear (beacon, probe, shovel) and have the knowledge to use them.
Avalanche awareness courses are highly recommended if you lack experience.
Weather:
Winter conditions can be severe, with sudden weather changes.
Always check forecasts and prepare for subzero temperatures.
Physical Demands:
Moderate fitness is required for both the ascent and descent.
Skiing backcountry routes requires intermediate to advanced skills.
While detailed blog accounts and official guides are scarce, local ski resorts like Sugadaira Kogen may provide guidance or tour options for safe routes.
Avalanche risk updates and specific descent routes can be verified at local outdoor or skiing shops in Nagano.
