Description

Kagami-ike, or Mirror Pond, is a serene, reflective pond located at the base of Mt. Togakushi. The name “Kagami” translates to “mirror” in Japanese, which is fitting because, on calm days, the surface of the pond creates a near-perfect reflection of the surrounding mountains. This natural mirror effect is especially striking in autumn when the trees surrounding the pond display vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows, making it a favorite spot for photographers and nature lovers.

The pond is easily accessible from Togakushi Shrine and serves as a popular stop for hikers coming down from the mountain or exploring the nearby trails. It’s a relatively flat and short walk from the shrine area, so it’s manageable for those who aren’t taking on the full mountain hike but still want to experience the scenery. A viewing area is set up along the shore, providing an unobstructed vantage point for taking in the tranquil landscape.

Access

Kagami-ike is accessible via a short trail from the Okusha section of Togakushi Shrine, taking around 20–30 minutes on foot. The pond itself is not very large, with a straightforward walking path around part of its perimeter, though it’s generally viewed from a single main vantage point.

Can I visit here in winter?

Kagami-ike Pond can be accessed in winter, but it comes with certain challenges and considerations. Snowfall in the Togakushi area is quite heavy, and the pond and trails are often blanketed in snow. The path leading to Kagami-ike may be less maintained, with limited access or closures depending on the snow conditions, and winter gear, such as crampons and snowshoes, is usually recommended if the trails are open.

In winter, the pond itself often freezes over, so the usual mirror-like reflections are not visible. However, the surrounding snow-covered trees and mountains create a strikingly different, quiet landscape. For those willing to navigate the winter trails, it’s an opportunity to see the Togakushi area in a more isolated, tranquil state, although it’s best suited for hikers familiar with winter conditions.

If planning a visit in winter, it’s advised to check local weather updates and trail conditions, as well as to prepare adequately for snowy, icy paths and cold temperatures.

You might need to pick up arrange some rental snow shoes in Mont Bell in Nagano or at Togakushi Ski Resort.

Tip: Early morning is one of the best times to visit, as the stillness enhances the mirror effect, and the light is often softer, creating beautiful reflections. In addition to the autumn colors, Kagami-ike has its own appeal in spring, with fresh greenery and occasional mountain cherry blossoms, and in winter, when snow-dusted peaks can be seen in the pond’s reflection.
