Bishopsgate is a historic ward in the City of London, located on an 8th century gateway and ancient road running from London to York. The area is home to many famous skyscrapers, including the Broadgate Tower, Heron Tower and 16th century Paul Pindar's house which is now preserved at the Victoria and Albert Museum. The ward has a resident population of only 222 (2011) but thousands commute through its streets every day, as it contains the main offices of several major banks and the Liverpool Street Station. Bishopsgate is notable for being the first home of the Bethlem Royal Hospital and for its Huguenot refugee population who, in the late 1600s, began to migrate away from the densifying area.
