Oxford Street is a bustling, 1.2 mile-long stretch in the City of Westminster in London's West End. Believed to have been originally part of a Roman road connecting Calleva Atrebatum (near Silchester, Hampshire) to Camulodunum (now Colchester), it was known as Tyburn Road before finally settling on the name "Oxford Street" by the 18th century. It has since become Europe’s busiest shopping street, with around half a million daily visitors! Here you can find everything from department stores to small independent retailers, street traders, and more. The street has also become well-known for its annual Christmas lights, where celebrities turn them on in a dazzling display. Despite competition from out-of-town shopping centres and online retailers, Oxford Street remains hugely popular, and is an exciting, fun experience for all kinds of shoppers!
